“many dogs run wild in the city. some are abandoned by their owners and others are born to lost dogs. strays have a limited life expectancy even when they band together in packs. they are prey to disease, parasites, weather and automobiles. they tend to be frightened and vicious”*
Dithering is a processing mechanism for both audio and graphic images intended for publication or printing. It is based on the concept of reducing or even removing data from the original file while inserting a new pattern to reconstruct the image in a smaller color scale—or, in the case of audio, introducing random noise so that our ears do not perceive the dynamics of low-resolution audio as distortion or error.
This process highlights how we are constantly deceived physically and psychologically in our relationship with digital media. This was also demonstrated by the stroboscopic effect when watching analog films, where the number of frames per second, as well as the frequency at which a lamp operates, dictates how we can perceive the movement of images or light as static or oscillating. We are still far from achieving a faithful reproduction of the body’s senses such as smell, taste, or sexual pleasure. Images aim to evoke these feelings vividly, but they always depend on our imagination and on concepts we attribute to past experiences and desires. Whether through graphic or explicit representation, images demand prior knowledge and an analysis of the medium so that one can judge whether what is seen is real, acceptable, staged, or even computergenerated.
The exhibition presents works from a private collection, moraes-barbosa collection, and Martins&Montero’s colletion in an orderly manner. Arranged in lines, I intend to form a rhythmic structure that can be disrupted by bodies acting on impulse, chance, or reaction, maintaining a constant and underlying random noise.
