Booth E03

For the first time at the SP-Arte Rotas Brasileiras, Martins&Montero is proud to present a dialog between artists Davi Rodrigues (Cachoeira, 1968), Maria Thereza Alves (São Paulo, 1961) and Jimmie Durham (USA, 1940-2021).

Davi Rodrigues’ work is inseparable from the experience of being born and living on the banks of the Paraguaçu River, in the city of Cachoeira, in the Recôncavo Baiano. His new series of paintings on paper, Memória e presente do meu Paraguaçu (2024), features the river as the main character. In Folia de criança (2003-2005) Davi recalls the typical children’s games of the Recôncavo region.

Maria Thereza Alves’ multidisciplinary production is closely related to her political activism, whether in favor of ecology, the rights of indigenous peoples or territorial struggles, creating a body of work that investigates the circumstances of certain regions in order to bear witness to silenced histories. Jimmie Durham was an artist, designer, poet and writer. In 2019, he was awarded the Golden Lion for his work as a whole at the 58th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. Together, the two artists founded the Labinac project, which produces works based on the idea of developing a hybrid between sculptures and utilitarian pieces.
